Quake! A 6.5, by USGS preliminary reading, centered near San Simeon. Hope it didn't beat up Hearst Castle too badly. Felt here in Palo Alto, about 200 miles away, as a noticeable slow rolling ground wave. Blinds and other hanging objects swayed, but it never got to the 'OK, time to dive under the desk' point.
Update: Looks like damage is minor. Update 2: The old town of Paso Robles, one of the prettiest Old California locations, was smacked down pretty badly. And it wasn't a minor affair to three people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time, in front of a collapsing building. I've walked right through there in days past... If you want a textbook example of an aftershock swarm, check it out. (Good for about a week after the event.) Update 3: Citizen Smash has a round-up of quake blog posts. |
