Another new, clued record label

Techdirt writes up another MP3 and customer friendly startup label, Loca, and comments:

...sounds like more new music labels are going with this approach. At this point, they're all small time operations - but it's a step in the right direction. It will take time, but these new labels that are both artist and consumer friendly are going to be what kills the old time recording industry...
What he said. And you know, there's another way to get to the critical mass platform that I foresee: a roll-up. Some of you M&A artistes might want to be keeping a list...

MP3.com assets?

The blogfather mourns the apparent passing of MP3.com, as it awaits dismemberment by CNet. Meanwhile one of his readers suggests that the Indy music database is an asset that could be salvaged. I suppose it's always possible that CNet is intending exactly that (yeah, I know, dream on), but if not, that collection and the set of relations with indy artists would be a good starting place for my own vision of a genre-driven, mid-market music platform. I'm not equipped to invest in that area myself, but hey, I thought I'd point it out in case someone else is looking for an entry on the cheap.
