New biz models for the pop star end of the power curve Roji-san has a long and very well thought out analysis of rebuilding the business model for 'made' pop stars. That is, high gross acts that are the result of what he call 'directed', promotion driven stategies, rather than 'organic' growth. Britney, not the Beatles. He makes a very convincing case that these are becoming (if not already) separate markets. For those following this discussion for a while, note the similarity in Roji's argument with Kevin Kelly's notion that the power law balance is out of whack. If they are evolving into separate markets, this makes intuitive sense.
He also makes a decent case for an alternate method of organizing the business that tries to promote the next Spice Girls or Madonna, now that distribution control as a success factor is slipping. If you buy his arguments, it leaves a big question hanging: What's the model for the rest of the market (and the rest of us)? |
