SF images redux

Apparently a side-effect of my rapid-fire blogosphere catch-up scanning is that only images are sticking. If you'd seen this even ten years ago, wouldn't it have been on a science fiction book cover? The cool thing is it's Burt Rutan's spaceship and launcher, and it flies. Space Race II, here we go!

We seem to have struck MiGs!

If this isn't a weird image, I don't know what is. Right out of Mad Max. Obviously we've found the real reason for the Iraqi invasion: Dig in the right place, and you'll find complete multi-million dollar Russian fighter jets. When does the mining claim office open?

There's a more complete series of photos at StrategyPage, unfortunately with a lot of annoying pop-ups.

LCD television market in fast growth

Worldwide sales of LCD flat panel televisions more than tripled year-on-year in Q1 2003. This is still a small fraction of the total television market, but the technology has now passed the proverbial knee-in-the-curve and is entering fast growth. This will in turn accelerate the unit-driven price/performance learning curve into positive feedback with market acceptance.

LCD flatpanels are already taking a large fraction of monitor sales in the less price sensitive PC marketplaces. Their form factor is also well suited for consumer products, particularly in East Asian households, where most of the TV sales are taking place now. This is the first scene of the last act for venerable CRT technology.

Disclosure: We have an investment in the flat panel technology space.
