Printable CDs

Memorex ships a CD-R that can be run directly through an inkjet printer for labeling. One presumes it requires a straight-thru paper path, unless they've also reinvented the floppy disk. Via BoingBoing

The buzzword cycle begins anew

Stefan Smalla rightfully skewers an Economist article that may have this quarter's buzzwords/paragraph award hands-down, barring conference announcements, of course. I read the same thing in hard copy and could feel my eyes rolling back from the soporific effect of the buzzword IV drip. The editorial standards at The Economist are either getting lax, or aren't applied as fiercely to their technopunditry.

These things do run in cycles. Now that the memory of the last batch of smashed up companies associated with the whole 'intelligence' buzzword cluster has faded, it looks like we're ready for another run at it. But let's do get a grip. We're talking about sensors, and some control devices, getting cheap enough to push them outside of traditional automation and control environments. But they won't be ubiquitous for a long time if ever. In a real economic world, they go where there's an ROI of some sort. As for 'sentient', the aggregate system is still likely to have the approximate intelligence of a circling deerfly, and often be just as annoying. And 'convivial'? I'm sure poor Ivan Illich is spinning in his grave.
