It's a Great Day

So Long  Sucker

Lots more risk and work ahead, but it's a great day to be an American or an Iraqi. I am proud of our fighting men and women.

Another VC joins the party + market timing

Charles Hudson joins the VC blog party. Entrepreneurs check out his post on the ramifications of market timing, including the absolutely true revelation that VCs do not believe those Gartner slides you all show us. (Gasp!)

While his home page doesn't show it, since he outs himself in the linked post, I can reveal that Charles works with the spooks. It's the only fund we've dealt with where some of the diligence experts are known by first name - only. Seriously, how cool is it when a three-letter-agency has a venture fund, an (unofficial) blog, and is whoopin' serious Ba'ath ass. You go!

Chip design startups on an uptick

A trade association report shows two consecutive quarters of growth of venture investment into fabless chip companies. Good news for the short term, if the trend can be sustained. For the long run, the increasing costs associated with new chip geometries are becoming a problem. A full tapeout for .13 micron is somewhere in the $750k range. Estimates for .09 are rather variable, but the lowest I've heard is $1.25m, ranging up to $2m. No wonder the FPGA vendors are happy these days.
